Don Harper of Blackwell, Chesterfield and Mansfield Town.
Donald “ Don” Harper was born in Blackwell in 1921. His parents were Frank and Lucy nee Chell, and siblings were Frank, Olive and John when the family were at 189 Primrose Hill in 1939. Don was a Colliery Banksman at the time, so presumably he started his professional football career after that date. We would welcome a photo of Don to add to the site if anyone has one to share.
Don was playing for Mansfield Town in the 1946/7 season at Outside Right position, but the Stags records are not clear as to when he left the club. Wikipedia has a claim that he played 21 games for Mansfield in that season, scoring once, and that he had previously played for Chesterfield in the 1945/6 season.
Don married Beatrice Parr in 1947 and it is believed that they had 3 daughters and one son. Don passed away in 1990.
