In 1871 the A Winning shaft was sunk on the border with South Normanton, and the Blackwell Colliery Company built 90 houses by the side of the works to accomodate the miners, and this development became known as The Colliery or The Colliery Rows.
As the demand grew for expansion of the mine, a further 109 houses were built along Primrose Hill, and this map shows the two rows of back to back houses, the original Colliery School, The Blackwell Hotel, a Hospital, Institute, Methodist Chapel and Pendean, the home of the Managing Director of the Blackwell Colliery Company, Mr J T Todd.
