Pipes Farm
The Parish records of Births Deaths and Marriages for Blackwell start in 1683 and show Pipes (or Pypes) families in Blackwell in the 1690s. Many of them are described as Paupers, indicating that they were at times dependant upon Parish Relief .
The 1758 map of Blackwell shows a few closes and a croft in this area in the occupation of John Pipes. The first Census of 1841 shows his grandson George here and he was a Framework Knitter. He and wife Ann had 5 children, one of whom, Richard, took over in 1865 after his parents have died; their home was not known as a farm until 1861 and then only with 13 acres. Richard married Rebecca Dobbs of Newton in 1868, a school teacher. Richard farmed it with his sisters Hannah and Ann, and a niece Sarah Ann. Hannah continued on the farm after the deaths of Richard and Ann, again with Sarah Ann, who was herself head of the household in 1911 after Hannah had passed away.
