Until the middle of the 19th Century, Industry in Old Blackwell and Newton was  Farming and Framework Knitting, with a small element of Shallow Coal MIning.

Then everything changed with the sinking of deep pits at Blackwell, Hilcote and Tibshelf and the Midland Railway development at Westhouses.
